James H. Patton was born circa 1767 in South Carolina. He was the son of Robert Patton and
Sarah Farris of the Camden District of South Carolina. James Patton married Jane Acker circa
1800 in South Carolina. For some inexplicable reason, South Carolina did not maintain marriage
records until the 20th century. James Patton may have been assigned to Fort Hawkins when it
was built in 1806. This assumption is due to the fact that his son, Moses L. Patton was said to
have been born in Twiggs County, Georgia in 1806. Two James Pattons appear in the 1800
Census of South Carolina. One is living in Chester County and was between the ages of 26 and
45. The other is living in adjoining York County and is in the same age range. It is possible that
neither was James H. Patton, since one James had three children and the other five. It is unusual
that his father, Col. Robert Patton is not shown in the census that year even though he was still
alive. He may have been in another state or was simply missed by the census taker.
James Patton served in several different offices in the government of Twiggs County, Georgia.
He was commissioned as the first Tax Receiver of Twiggs County, Georgia on May 5, 1810 and
served until January 16, 1812. He owned land in the western portion of Twiggs County, Georgia
along the Old Marion Road, a portion of which ran west from the present day Sgoda Road near
Interstate Highway 16 toward the mouth of Swift Creek at the Ocmulgee River. Most of these
lands were placed in Bibb County when that county was created in 1823. James Patton served
as Justice of the Peace of Belcher's District, 323rd G.M.D., from March 4, 1818 to March 8, 1819.
During the War of 1812, James H. Patton served as a major. The state of Georgia was threatened
by Indian attacks along the Ocmulgee and Altamaha Rivers. The State set up a vast network of
forts along the river. Major Patton was based at Fort Hawkins and was in charge of the spies placed
along the Ocmulgee River south of the fort. During the year 1814, Major Patton was in command
of all of the various militia units which had formed to defend the area south of Macon from Indian
attack.
In the year 1826, Major Patton was living on a tract of land located on the southeast side of Swift
Creek in Land Lot 117 of the 7th Land District of Twiggs County. The land became part of Bibb
County in 1823. Today the site located across the creek from the site of Brown and Williamson
Tobacco Company's plant. It was located on the waters of what became White Elk Spring Lake
or Edward's Lake. The Edwards family owned a large tract of land in the area. Part of their land
was taken in by Camp Wheeler. Harry Stillwell Edwards, who owned the land for many years,
was a nationally renowned author of Southern Literature. This land, which originally belonged to
Joseph McKinney, was sold to Zachariah Lamar in 1826 for $309.00.
Major Patton may have owned other lands in southeastern Bibb and northwestern Twiggs Counties.
The 1818 Tax Digest of Twiggs County listed James Patton as owning Land Lot 118 of the 28th Land
District of Twiggs County. This land is located just off the southwestern side of the Old Marion Road,
northwest of where it intersects the Sgoda Road. Major Patton's eldest son, Robert Smith Patton
sold Land Lot 136 of the 7th Land District (202.5 acres), Land Lot 135 of the 7th Land District (202.5 acres),
Land Lot 148 of the 7th Land District (177 acres), and Land Lot 158 of the 7th Land District (151 acres)
to Timothy Matthews for the paltry sum of $300.00. This may have been land owned at one time by his
father.
Major Patton died between August 24, 1826 and July 1, 1827 and was probably buried near his home.
Whether he was buried near his Swift Creek home, Fort Hill Cemetery, or elsewhere, will never be
known. Any records of Major Patton's activities in Twiggs County were destroyed when the Twiggs
County Courthouse burned at the turn of the 20th century.

was a member of the Texas Veteran's Association.
